NC Children’s Hospital

North Carolina’s Children’s Hospital is building an incredible rooftop recreational area on the 7th floor of the Children’s Hospital called the Lookout Terrace.

The Lookout Terrace was the vision of the Children’s Hospital’s chief physician, Dr. Alan Stiles, based on his experiencing working with a particular patient in the Newborn Critical Care Center. During the child’s five years at the hospital, he was never able to go outside. Dr. Stiles vowed this would never happen again to another child, and the concept of an outdoor play area was born.

Lookout Terrace will give Children’s Hospital patients and families something they’ve never had before: a chance to experience the outdoors during their inpatient stays. Whether just to breathe some fresh Carolina air or enjoy some really fun play areas, Lookout Terrace will enable children with serious medical conditions to go outside in a convenient area with all the equipment and access necessary for hospital beds, wheel chairs, IV poles, and more.

Our family will fund the “Tree of Life,” a 25 foot metal tree honoring the courageous children who have undergone treatment at the hospital. The tree will provide shade to the garden overlooking the Bell Tower and beautiful Kenan Stadium in the distance. The Eric Montross Basketball Camp funds have endowed the foundation of this terrace, the Goren Foundation (Tom & Lisa Hazen, Trustees) has endowed the structure and upkeep of the terrace and our good friends, Chris and Ann Smith, have endowed the butterfly garden.

Please join us in making Lookout Terrace a wonderful reality for patients at N.C. Children’s Hospital. We have a goal of raising additional funds for the Umbrella table ($16,800), Mountain Appliques ($12,600), Rock Seating Group ($4,900), and of course more butterflies are needed ($250-1,000).

Please don’t wait! Construction on the Lookout Terrace has begun with completion expected by mid-2012. Contact me at jim “at” jimkitchen.org if you are interested in helping. All gifts, big or small, are welcome.
